CFCC supports Canadian students

In November 2015, Corporations for Community Connections (CFCC), in partnership with Siemens Canada, provided 140 refurbished laptops to the Halton District School Board. All donated laptops were prepared and tested during CFCC workshop, primarily staffed by Siemens volunteers at the end of November 2015. This initiative was a result of the time and efforts of more than 60 volunteers over the course of two full days.

Laptops are wonderful educational tools allowing students to develop technical skills much needed in current and future job markets.” – said Philip Schaus, CFCC’s President and CEO. “Our laptop refurbishment process, together with the efforts of Siemens volunteers, creates an exciting second life for laptops, which would otherwise be recycled or disposed. Our process has a substantial impact, both socially and environmentally.”

Laptops supported elementary and secondary schools in Halton region: 80 of them were used in the Elementary Robotics program in 16 elementary schools; the remaining 60 laptops were used to support Technological Design courses and future Robotics projects at 19 secondary schools within the Region. The laptops have also assisted in preparing students for the Architectural and Mechanical CADD competitions in the Halton Skills Competition.

In addition to the CFCC’s and Siemens’ laptop contribution, Siemens Canada also donated PLM Solid Edge, a student version of the sophisticated PLM 3-D design software used by some of the world’s biggest car and robot manufacturers, available on selected laptops donated to high schools. The combined value of Siemens’ in-kind donation including software and decommissioned laptops is $145,000.
